چکیده

We address the problem of integrating multi-frame stereo and shading cues within the framework of optimization in the infinite-dimensional space of piecewise smooth surfaces. Cue integration then reduces to the determination of regions where prior assumptions on the reflectance of the surfaces can be enforced. By combining cues, our formulation allows defining a well-posed problem even when reconstruction from stereo or shading in isolation would be ill-posed. For a simplified model we prove the necessary conditions for optimality, and propose an iterative optimization algorithm, which we implement using ultranarrowband level set methods.

Evaluation of Stereoscopy and Lit Shading for a Counting Task in Knot Visualization

We present an experiment on depth cues for knot visualization in desktop virtual reality (fishtank VR). We used a within-subjects experiment to investigate stereoscopic visuals and 3D lit shading. Participants were required to count crossings in visualized knots – a fundamental task in classical knot diagram interpretation. Participants made significantly more errors with stereoscopic visuals t...

Three-dimensional object shape from shading and contour disparities.

Both non-Lambertian shading, specularities in particular, and occluding contours have ill-matched binocular disparities. For example, the disparities of specularities depend not only on a surface's position but also on its curvature. Shading and contour disparities do in general not specify a point on the surface. I investigated how shading and contours contribute to perceived shape in stereosc...

Perceiving shape from shading.

Our visual experience of the world is based on two-dimensional images: nat patterns of varying light intensity and color faIling on a single plane of cells in the retina. Yet we come to perceive solidity and depth. We can do this because a number of cues about depth are available in the retinal image: shading, perspective, occlusion of one object by another and stereoscopic disparity. In some m...

Recovery of surfaces with discontinuities by fusing shading and range data within a variational framework

This work provides a variational framework for fusing range and intensity data for recovering regularized surfaces. It is shown that this framework provides natural boundary conditions for the shape-from-shading problem, results in a new shape-from-shading formulation in the absence of range data, and provides a new fusion paradigm when range data is incorporated. The approach is demonstrated o...
